Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Vinícius Jr.’s recent social media activity has garnered attention in Spain’s capital. This comes after the pair gave their opinions on who they thought was most suited to take over as Carlo Ancelotti’s new number eight.

On Tuesday, midfielder Kroos rattled the foundations of Real Madrid by announcing his desire to retire this summer.

The 34-year-old was largely expected to sign another one-year contract extension at the Santiago Bernabéu, so his departure came as quite a surprise.

Messages of thanks and well-wishes have come in for Kroos over the last 24 hours, and the German has taken the time to react to several of them. And one of Kroos’ responses has since garnered the most attention.

This comes as the midfield maestro appears to have chosen the person to whom he plans to pass on his famous no.8 jersey in Madrid. The player in question? Federico Valverde.

In a lengthy Instagram message to his long-time engine room buddy Valverde, Kroos confirmed: ‘Tomorrow, we will discuss topic #8.’
