Barcelona has reignited their interest in Marco Verratti, as reported by Spanish media outlets. The club has long admired the Italian midfielder, although previous attempts to secure his services never came to fruition. Despite Barcelona’s pursuit, Verratti remained loyal to PSG, where he eventually achieved legendary status.
However, last summer saw a significant change as the 31-year-old departed for Qatar in a controversial transfer, joining Al-Arabi. The deal raised eyebrows due to PSG’s close ties to the Qatari state, with allegations suggesting favorable treatment in the transaction to aid PSG’s financial situation.
Al-Arabi splashed out €45 million for Verratti, surpassing his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of just under €30 million. Now, a year later, there are murmurs of a potential return to Europe for the midfielder.
Reports from Mundo Deportivo suggest Barcelona’s renewed interest in Verratti, who has impressed with seven assists in 17 appearances for Al-Arabi. The Catalan club sees him as a viable option to bolster their midfield.
However, the report acknowledges several hurdles in any potential deal. Firstly, Barcelona’s financial constraints make Verratti’s hefty wages a concern. Moreover, he remains under contract until next year, necessitating a transfer fee.
Furthermore, doubts linger over Verratti’s performance level after a season in Qatar’s less competitive league. Despite these challenges, Barcelona’s history suggests unexpected transfers are not unprecedented.
In contrast, Barcelona seems closer to securing a deal for Guido Rodriguez from Real Betis on a free transfer, according to journalist Rudy Galetti. This move appears more feasible given the financial realities facing the club.
