Two Liverpool players have been cautioned that they might receive some disappointing news soon.
Four Liverpool men are in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-player England squad for Euro 2024, but seven names will be cut before the tournament begins in Germany.
Speaking to englandfootball.com, Southgate praised Reds duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones, who, along with Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, made the longlist despite being uncapped at the senior level.
However, Southgate warned the trio to be prepared for the possibility of not making the final squad next week.
He said, “I’ve told these boys we’re only taking 26. They might be ready now, but this experience could be valuable for the future. I can’t guarantee anything due to potential injury situations.”
If Jones and Quansah are cut from the final squad on June 8, it would be a significant disappointment.
However, their inclusion in the provisional squad indicates they are in Southgate’s plans for future call-ups. It’s puzzling how Harvey Elliott was overlooked despite his strong season finish.
While Southgate receives criticism for his tactical decisions and lack of silverware, he at least communicates bad news respectfully, unlike some other international coaches with Liverpool players.
If Jones and Quansah make the final 26, it would be great, but if not, they’ll have more time to rest before the 2024/25 season.
They have a good chance of making future squads, and perhaps Southgate will consider Elliott eventually.
