Mainoo had a breakout season at United, being one of the first names on manager Erik ten Hag’s squad sheet. The 19-year-old scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City, securing United’s position in the Europa League next season.
MEN Sport believes that United has placed all but four players on the transfer list this summer. Mainoo is one of four players, the others being Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Alejandro Garnacho.
Mainoo appears to be a major player in United’s future, and if the current claims are to be believed, a new midfielder may join the club. According to reports in Portugal, the Reds are looking to recruit Benfica star Joao Neves.
According to the Record, United had a £51 million deal for Neves rejected this week. Neves is believed to be worth closer to €100 million (£85 million) by the Primeira Liga club, with a €120 million (£102 million) release clause in his contract.
Mainoo spoke with MUTV in April about his early days in the United first squad. One of the questions may provide insight into what the teenager wants from United’s transfer activity this summer, if they acquire a new midfielder.
When asked to select his ideal United midfield partner, Mainoo said.
The 19-year-old answered by outlining why he chose Paul Scholes, but also why the lineup would not work in reality.
“I’d suggest Paul Scholes,” Mainoo told MUTV in April. “Although there may not be much defense between the two of us. But yes, Scholes. Scholes – undoubtedly.
“Because of everything.” His passing, mobility, and finishing technique. His intellect. “Yes, he was an excellent player.”
