Arsenal have agreed a fee to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, according to Leonino.pt.
The Portuguese website claims that they have an “exclusive”, stating that the Gunners are “about to sign” the Swedish international for an initial €90m (£76m), with a deal expected to be completed by “the end of the month.”
It is believed that Mikel Arteta’s side won’t trigger the €100m (£84.5m) release clause but they could end up paying more depending on performance-related add-ons.
Leonino report that the total fee could total €120m (£101.4m) based on goals and appearances in the Champions League, as well as titles won, “specifically, Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup”.
Gyokeres had a phenomenal season for Sporting
The 25-year-old moved to Portugal from Coventry City last summer. A number of Premier League clubs opted against recruiting the forward at the time when he was available for only €20m.
Sporting have reaped the benefits, with Gyokeres helping them win the Liga Portugal title. He hit the back of the net 29 times in the league, finishing the season with 43 goals in all competitions.
Unsurprisingly, his form has attracted a lot of attention but, up until now, teams have been put off by the sizeable buyout fee. The Gunners have seemingly found a way to pay less upfront for the striker but at the expense of it potentially costing a lot more over the long term.
Arsenal fans should be cautious about this story
While Leonino are insisting that this deal will go ahead, no respected source has backed up this information so far.
The Athletic Journalist David Ornstein, for example, who is usually incredibly accurate when it comes to the Gunners, has not mentioned any such agreement for Gyokeres. Supporters would be wise to treat this report with a very large pinch of salt.
