Arsenal’s quest for a new number nine continues, with recent discussions centering around former Coventry striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Swedish forward enjoyed an outstanding season in Portugal, netting 43 goals and providing 15 assists for Ruben Amorim’s side, leading them to a league title.
Gyokeres’ impressive performance has naturally sparked interest in a potential move to the Premier League, with reports over the past week suggesting a deal with Arsenal is close. However, recent updates indicate that progress has stalled.
Fabrizio Romano, speaking to CaughtOffside, provided insights into Arsenal’s current stance on Gyokeres. “In the last 24, 48 hours, we had some rumours about the deal being closed, being very advanced. I also saw something from Portugal, like almost completed, and I am told this is not true,” Romano stated.
“At the moment, Arsenal are not at that advanced stage of their negotiations for Gyokeres. They made contact with the player months ago, between April and May. They are aware of the €100 million release clause, but also the overall cost of the deal in terms of salary and other factors.”
Romano highlighted that Arsenal have not yet finalised their decision on whether Gyokeres is their primary target. “They want to take their time to assess their options.
So, at the moment with Gyokeres, it is not something imminent or close, but it’s an option. I don’t think Arsenal will go for crazy money for Gyokeres, so it has to be a different deal structure or Arsenal could look at different opportunities.”
While Gyokeres’ stellar season at Sporting cannot be denied, questions remain about his ability to perform on a more challenging stage like the Premier League.
The potential €100 million transfer fee, approximately £85 million, is substantial for a player with only one remarkable season in Portugal.
This financial consideration, coupled with uncertainties about Gyokeres’ adaptability to the Premier League, likely contributes to Arsenal’s cautious approach.
Gyokeres’ power, speed, and finishing abilities make him an attractive option for Arsenal, offering a skill set not currently present in their squad. However, the high release clause and his relatively unproven status on a tougher stage are significant factors that Arsenal must weigh before making a final decision.
