Liverpool FC’s under-18 team took a stand against racism by walking off the pitch twice during the Bundesliga Cup youth tournament in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany. The young Reds, led by U18s coach Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, faced Hoffenheim U19s and Eintracht Frankfurt U19s over the weekend, with both matches marred by incidents of alleged racist abuse.
The first incident occurred during Liverpool’s opening game against Hoffenheim on Friday. A Liverpool player reported being targeted with a racist comment from an opponent, which left him visibly upset. In response, the Liverpool team halted the match and walked off the field. Although they resumed the game later, Liverpool ultimately suffered a 6-0 defeat. This bold move underscored the team’s zero-tolerance stance on racism.
A similar situation unfolded on Saturday during Liverpool’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt. The same Liverpool player reported experiencing racist abuse from a Frankfurt player. In a show of solidarity, the Liverpool team once again chose to leave the pitch in protest. Consequently, the competition organizers awarded a 3-0 victory to Frankfurt, as the game could not continue under the circumstances.
Liverpool FC has called on Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, and the tournament organizers to thoroughly investigate these incidents. In a statement, the club confirmed that their player reported the abuse promptly to the match officials, teammates, and coaching staff. Liverpool’s management decided to withdraw the team from the field on both occasions to stand against the unacceptable behavior and protect their players.
“We are proud of our player for his prompt actions in reporting the incident and the maturity of his response,” Liverpool’s statement read. The club assured that the affected player and his teammates are receiving support from the Academy safeguarding team.
