Ivan Toney’s future looks to have taken a shock new twist ahead of the new season.
The England star was widely anticipated to leave Brentford for a new opportunity this summer after Euro 2024. At 28, he has been linked with several clubs, with his contract set to expire in 2025 and negotiations not yielding results.
Recent reports suggest he is waiting for Spurs to show interest, with his valuation around £60 million. However, the situation has taken a turn as Brentford’s record signing, Igor Thiago, suffered an injury during his first game for the team. The 23-year-old Brazilian, who joined from Club Brugge, made his debut in a 5-2 victory over AFC Wimbledon.
He scored twice in the match, but the club has announced that Thiago sustained a meniscus injury and will miss the upcoming friendly against Benfica. The statement on Brentford’s official website read:
“Igor Thiago suffered a meniscus injury during the Bees’ 5-2 win over AFC Wimbledon. The striker, who scored twice in his debut, will not be available for tonight’s game against Benfica. Further scans will be conducted next week to assess the injury, with more details to follow.”
Thiago scored 29 goals across all competitions last season, and Brentford will be hoping the injury isn’t serious. However, if it is, it will likely prevent Toney from making a move this summer, as Brentford would be short on striking options.
Toney transferred to Brentford from Peterborough United in 2020 for £10 million. Since then, he has made 141 appearances and scored 72 goals, including 36 in the Premier League.
