Former Chelsea star Didier Drogba has suggested that a Manchester United player should consider leaving the club if he wants to further his career. Drogba recommended moving to a club like Chelsea, known for its winning mindset and history of securing titles. He expressed concern that remaining at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag might impede the player’s professional growth.
Recent reports indicate that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has extended a contract offer to Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, who is reportedly enthusiastic about the possibility of joining the French team. Sancho had a successful loan stint at Borussia Dortmund last season, but his relationship with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been tense, with Sancho accusing Ten Hag of making him a “scapegoat” following public criticism.
Sancho, who transferred from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United for £73 million in July 2021, has not played in a competitive match for United since their 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest last August. Although efforts have been made to mend the relationship between Sancho and Ten Hag, including Sancho’s participation in a pre-season friendly against Rangers, a summer transfer remains possible, with Manchester United open to selling the England international. The improved rapport between Sancho and Ten Hag could strengthen Manchester United’s position in negotiations.
During his loan period at Borussia Dortmund, Sancho performed notably well, particularly in the Champions League semi-final against PSG, where he was instrumental in their first-leg victory. This performance has kept him on PSG’s radar as a potential signing.
According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, PSG is close to finalizing a deal with Sancho. However, it is still unclear whether Manchester United will agree to the transfer and at what cost. Borussia Dortmund had expressed interest in re-signing Sancho but lacked the necessary funds.
Other top clubs, including Barcelona and Juventus, have also shown interest in Sancho. Nonetheless, PSG appears to be the most likely destination if he leaves Manchester United. Reports suggest that Manchester United’s owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, is asking for approximately €50 million (£42 million) for the winger. PSG’s heightened interest in Sancho has been fueled by Kylian Mbappe’s recent move to Real Madrid, with Sancho seen as a valuable addition.
Aouna also notes that Sancho is excited about the opportunity PSG has presented and is keen to join the club following their offer. This potential transfer could also benefit Manchester United, which is negotiating with PSG for the acquisition of Manuel Ugarte.
Drogba’s advice for Sancho to leave Manchester United underscores the ongoing speculation about the winger’s future. The chance to join a championship-winning club like Chelsea or PSG could provide Sancho with the opportunity to reach his full potential and achieve greater success. As the transfer window progresses, it will be intriguing to see where Sancho ultimately ends up and how his career develops.
