Manchester City recently played their third summer friendly, drawing 2-2 with Barcelona after trailing by a goal in the final minute, but losing 1-4 in the ensuing penalty shootout. Prior to this, City had not won in four matches, including their defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup final.
Besides the loss to Manchester United, the English champions also suffered defeats to Celtic (3-4) and AC Milan (2-3) in earlier friendlies, raising concerns for Pep Guardiola’s squad as they approach the new season.
Another pressing issue for Guardiola is Haaland’s recent injury. The Norwegian striker participated in all three friendlies against Celtic, AC Milan, and Barcelona. Although he scored in the first two games, his goal against Barcelona was disallowed despite the ball crossing the line. More troublingly, Haaland was substituted in the first half against Barcelona due to muscle discomfort. Guardiola commented on Haaland’s condition, stating he has a muscle issue and is struggling to move, which prompted the substitution to avoid further risk. Haaland will undergo a thorough examination to prevent a potential extended absence, which could significantly impact the team, especially with a large portion of the squad still on vacation.
Following their match against Barcelona, Manchester City will face Chelsea in another friendly on August 4, before competing in the English Super Cup against Manchester United on August 10.
