Liverpool are optimistic about retaining one of their important defenders after he changed his mind about leaving the club. Arne Slot, the new manager appointed in July, is still determining which players will be crucial for the team next season.
Amid ongoing uncertainty about several players, one of Liverpool’s regulars has committed to staying with the team. Reports had previously suggested that Joe Gomez, the England international, was considering a move away from Anfield, with Newcastle United showing interest and Gomez reportedly intrigued by their offer.
However, as the Premier League season approaches, Gomez is said to have reversed his decision. The Sunday Times reports that Gomez is now focused on becoming a key player for Liverpool under the new manager.
Earlier this summer, Newcastle United were ready to offer £45 million for Gomez, but the deal did not materialize. Although discussions between Liverpool and Newcastle took place, they did not progress to a point where Gomez was involved.
Liverpool will still aim to strengthen their defense, particularly as Virgil van Dijk’s contract is set to expire in 2025 and Joel Matip departed last season, leaving the team somewhat depleted in defense and other positions.
Gomez, who traveled to Germany for Euro 2024 with England but did not play regularly, has also been rumored to have attracted interest from Saudi Arabia. The defender is contracted with Liverpool until 2027 and hopes to play a significant role under Slot in the 2024/25 season.
