A recent update reveals that David de Gea turned down an opportunity to join a Premier League club during the January transfer window. The Spanish goalkeeper, who left Manchester United after a 12-year tenure last summer, is currently without a team. Although he has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, a transfer to the Middle East has not yet been finalized.
Nottingham Forest attempted to secure De Gea’s services, hoping to have him as their regular goalkeeper for the remainder of the season. However, the 33-year-old declined their short-term offer and chose to consider other possibilities.
Besides approaching De Gea, Forest also explored the availability of Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal. Ramsdale, who lost his starting role to David Raya, was initially a target for Forest before they ultimately signed Matz Sels from Strasbourg.
Sels joined Forest on deadline day in a £5.1 million deal, agreeing to a three-and-a-half-year contract. With Sels now on board, Forest’s goalkeeping lineup includes Matt Turner, Wayne Hennessey, and Odysseas Vlachodimos.
De Gea’s decision to reject Forest’s offer means he continues to seek a new team. Despite the closure of the transfer window, he remains a free agent and can still sign with a club outside of the typical transfer period.
During his time at Manchester United, De Gea made 545 appearances in various competitions and was a key player for the club. Additionally, he has earned 45 caps for the Spanish national team.
