A points deduction could be imminent for Everton as they begin the new season. The Premier League has alleged that the club violated profit and sustainability (PSR) rules by an additional £6.5 million for the 2022/23 season, beyond the previously noted £16 million overspend.
Previously, Everton faced a two-point deduction from an independent commission for overspending in the 2022/23 season, effective from April, and a 10-point deduction for violations in the 2021/22 season, which was later reduced to six points on appeal.
The current dispute revolves around whether £6.5 million in interest payments related to their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium should be included in their PSR calculations. While an independent commission dismissed the league’s claim to add £17 million in interest payments, they are revisiting the £6.5 million issue. The commission has not yet communicated their decision to either Everton or the league, despite both parties seeking a prompt resolution.
Everton contends that these stadium costs should not be factored into PSR calculations and remains optimistic about avoiding further PSR charges for the 2023/24 season. They are set to start their 2024/25 Premier League season against Brighton on August 17, having finished 15th last season.
