Arsenal may potentially intercept Chelsea’s proposed swap deal for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer, following Paris Saint-Germain’s withdrawal, according to reports.
The Gunners have already strengthened their squad with the addition of David Raya from Brentford for £27 million, and Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for approximately £42 million. However, Arsenal is still in the market for a new striker, with Eddie Nketiah likely heading to Marseille despite Arsenal rejecting their recent bid.
Earlier this week, David Ornstein reported that Chelsea and Napoli were negotiating a move involving Romelu Lukaku and considering Osimhen as part of the transaction. Now, Football Insider suggests that Arsenal might disrupt Chelsea’s plans to acquire Osimhen by pursuing the striker themselves. Arsenal considers a new striker essential, as Mikel Arteta aims to close the gap with Manchester City next season.
In addition to a striker, Arteta is also focused on strengthening central midfield. Arsenal has been linked to several players, including Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes. It is rumored that Guimaraes has a release clause around £100 million, but Newcastle might entertain a sale for over £80 million. Mikel Merino has also been heavily linked to Arsenal. Journalist Charles Watts anticipates Arsenal will intensify their pursuit of the Spanish midfielder now that Calafiori’s transfer is finalized. Watts noted that Merino, identified as a target before the Euros, has proven himself in the Premier League, and his versatility would greatly benefit Arsenal. While other midfielders like Fabian Ruiz have been mentioned, Merino remains Arsenal’s primary target to enhance their midfield options.
