Kalvin Phillips is “on the verge” of joining a Premier League team in what is being described as a “significant signing.”
Phillips has been strongly rumored to leave Manchester City this summer after a disappointing season last year.
He appeared in only four league matches for Man City before being loaned to West Ham United in January.
However, the 28-year-old did not make a notable impact with the Hammers, managing just eight league appearances during his stint at the London Stadium. Although Phillips participated in pre-season matches for Man City, he is nearing a transfer before the new season starts.
The Telegraph reports that he is close to finalizing a season-long loan move to Ipswich Town.
The arrangement does not include a buy option for the midfielder.
If Ipswich secures the transfer, it would be a significant achievement for the newly-promoted team, which finished behind Leicester City in the Championship last season.
Phillips would become the second player to move from Man City to Ipswich following Liam Delap’s transfer, which cost £20 million.
The Tractor Boys have also added Ben Johnson, Jacob Greaves, and Omari Hutchinson, who joined the club permanently after his loan last season. Phillips had previously transferred to Man City from Leeds United in July 2022 for £42 million.
He has made 31 appearances across all competitions since joining.
Regarding Phillips during pre-season, Pep Guardiola expressed uncertainty about his future at Man City.
“We’ll see,” Guardiola stated. “He’s training really well, he had a strong first half against Celtic. He came back from an injury, so we didn’t want to extend his minutes. But we’ll see; he understands the situation.”
