The Spanish goalkeeper departed from Old Trafford following the conclusion of the 2022/23 season when his contract with Manchester United ended. Since then, the 33-year-old has not participated in any competitive matches, while United signed Andre Onana from Inter as his replacement.

However, De Gea has now made his return to the field by joining Serie A club Fiorentina last week on a free transfer. The former Spain international was formally introduced as a Fiorentina player on Monday and explained his decision to take an extended break from football.

 

**WHAT DAVID DE GEA SAID**

In an interview with reporters, De Gea stated, “Manchester United is an exceptional club, and my loyalty will always remain there. I never considered retiring, but it was challenging to find the drive for a new beginning after 12 years at such a prestigious club. I have now found that motivation at Fiorentina.” After leaving Manchester United, David De Gea took a hiatus from professional football but has now signed with Fiorentina. He clarified that, although retirement was never an option for him, he initially struggled with motivation for a new chapter, which he has now found with Fiorentina.
