Manchester United staff have been impressed with Casemiro’s conditioning during pre-season, and the Brazilian midfielder might turn out to be an unexpected success story.
Casemiro’s decline was a notable narrative of the 2023/24 season, and at times, his form in pre-season appeared somewhat unstable.
Nevertheless, Casemiro performed well in the Community Shield and was very impressive in the opening match against Fulham.
United fans have also noticed a renewed vigor in Casemiro, a surprising turn given that many expected the midfielder to be sold this summer.
The transfer of Casemiro has stalled. As one of Manchester United’s highest-paid players, there were expectations that he might leave after missing the FA Cup Final, which United won without him. However, the club has struggled to find a buyer and has not pursued forcing him out.
Manchester United anticipated interest from the Saudi Pro League, but this has not materialized. Fabrizio Romano attributes this to a major development at Al-Ittihad. He explains on YouTube that the resignation of Al-Ittihad’s president changed the trajectory of their transfer window, affecting Manchester United’s plans as well.
Romano stated, “Casemiro was available on the market, and there were negotiations from Saudi Arabia. A significant change occurred when the Al-Ittihad president resigned; they wanted to sign Casemiro, but the deal fell through. The transfers for Arthur Theate and a managerial change from Stefano Pioli to Laurent Blanc also contributed, making Casemiro’s exit seem less imminent.”
United are still interested in signing Manuel Ugarte, initially expected to replace Casemiro. However, Ugarte now seems more likely to take Scott McTominay’s place, making Casemiro’s departure less likely.
The Saudi Pro League has shifted its strategy this summer, focusing on younger players like Moussa Diaby from Aston Villa, rather than those over 30. Casemiro’s improved performance reduces the urgency of his departure. While his high wages are a concern, his good form and positive contribution to the team make it easier for the club to manage his salary.
