Arne Slot explains why he’ll never copy Jurgen Klopp ahead of Anfield Premier League debut

Arne Slot maintains that Liverpool supporters will appreciate him for his team’s style of play rather than his post-match celebrations.

His predecessor, Jurgen Klopp, quickly connected with the Anfield fans through his emotional displays on the sidelines and at the end of matches, often celebrating with enthusiastic fist pumps.

While Klopp’s teams were beloved for their success—securing seven major trophies under his leadership—Slot presents a different demeanor. He remains more composed and does not seek the spotlight.

Slot believes the connection with fans will develop as they come to value his footballing philosophy. He explained: “My approach is to let the team play their best football, and through enjoying the way the team plays, they will hopefully come to appreciate and connect with me as their manager.”

He added that his style does not include post-match celebrations like fist pumps, unlike Klopp. Instead, Slot prefers to let the team’s performance foster support and affection for both the team and himself.

Klopp was also known for his visible frustration with referees. Slot mentioned: “I might experience frustration too, often due to referee decisions, but I don’t let it affect me to the point where people question my behavior. My role is to support the team during the game, and afterward, it’s up to the players to acknowledge the fans. I’ll be there to support them, but never in the forefront.”
