With Arne Slot still in the early stages of his tenure, it is fascinating to observe the attributes he brings to the Liverpool role, especially from the perspective of the players themselves.
So far, when the Dutchman has addressed the media, he has appeared straightforward yet modest, avoiding any grandiose proclamations.
Slot maintains a level of discretion but is also transparent about his expectations for the team, and this balance has been evident to the players.
In a conversation with Sport Nieuws, Cody Gakpo praised two of the early traits Slot has demonstrated, particularly his clarity, which has kept players well-informed about their roles.
Gakpo noted: “He (Slot) is very honest and straightforward, which is advantageous for players. It means you always know your position.” For the 25-year-old, this has included discussions about playing more on the left wing, a role he appreciates as it “wasn’t enjoyable” to be shifted around last season.
“I like that because that’s where I can contribute most effectively,” said Liverpool’s No. 18 about the left wing role. “Last year was challenging, but in hindsight, I gained a lot of experience.”
“During those times, playing in various positions wasn’t fun, but ultimately, it makes you a more well-rounded player.”
Slot has previously acknowledged that his approach bears some resemblance to Jurgen Klopp’s methods but with notable adjustments. Gakpo, however, has identified some differences so far.
He explained: “A lot has changed compared to Klopp’s approach, but he leaves a very positive impression. It’s not necessarily better or worse, but it is different.
“Our style of play has evolved. We now aim to advance more from a positional game to engage wingers in one-on-one situations, whereas last season focused more on counter-pressing and winning the ball in their half.
“It’s beneficial that we’ve already adapted to and are learning this new approach. If we can effectively combine both styles in the future, it could take us very far.”
