Mason Greenwood has reportedly made a decision regarding his international career after joining Marseille, according to recent reports.
The 22-year-old forward, who transferred permanently from Manchester United earlier this summer, made an immediate impact by scoring twice on his Ligue 1 debut for Marseille, now managed by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi.
Greenwood’s only appearance for the England senior team was in September 2020, as a late substitute in a Nations League match against Iceland. However, following that game, Greenwood and fellow England player Phil Foden were sent home for violating Covid-19 protocols.
Since then, Greenwood has not been called up to the England squad. His absence was further affected by his arrest in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm. Although these charges, brought in October 2022, were dropped by the CPS in February 2023, they had a lasting impact on his international career.
As Greenwood is of Jamaican heritage, he remains eligible to represent Jamaica under FIFA rules, which permit players to switch national teams if they have fewer than four competitive appearances before turning 21.
Jamaica recently appointed former Manchester United assistant coach Steve McClaren as their new manager. During his introduction, McClaren hinted at the possibility of including Greenwood, stating, “I met Mason and we had a little conversation. I want to go and meet everyone when I get back and find out whether they actually want to come here and play for Jamaica. Again, it’s the commitment. I will be making sure that we have a conversation with all the [eligible] players. We have a list.”
According to *The Sun*, Greenwood has decided to switch his international allegiance to Jamaica. The report suggests that Jamaica has already made a formal request to the English FA to complete the switch.
Although Jamaica has not qualified for the World Cup since 1998, the expanded 48-team tournament in 2026, taking place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, could improve their chances. McClaren, who signed a two-year contract with Jamaica earlier this month, will aim to lead the Reggae Boyz to their first World Cup under his management.
