Greenock Morton legend Martin Doak, who was the grandfather of emerging Scotland and Liverpool star Ben Doak, has died at the age of 60.
Doak, a committed player, devoted most of his career to Greenock Morton, where he made over 300 appearances. He began his time with the Cappielow club in 1979 after transferring from Shamrock Boys Club. At just 18, he made his first-team debut three years later.
A serious knee injury ended his playing career prematurely in 1994, but not before he had played 317 games and scored 34 goals for Morton. He also had a short loan period with Falkirk in 1984 and spent two years in Australia with Adelaide Hellas between 1988 and 1990.
In a touching tribute, Morton expressed their deep sadness at the passing of a player they considered a cornerstone of the club. The club’s statement said: “Greenock Morton Football Club was profoundly saddened by the news of former player Martin Doak’s passing, acknowledging his crucial role in our history.”
Doak’s impact at Morton and on those who knew him will be cherished and remembered.
