Mount was substituted by Joshua Zirkzee during the break due to a suspected injury, which compounded United’s frustrating outcome.
After transferring from Chelsea for £55 million last season, Mount made only 20 appearances due to injuries. Although he started this season in good health following preseason, manager Erik ten Hag delivered some unfortunate news post-match.
When questioned about Mount’s substitution, Ten Hag said, “It was necessary.” He noted there was a problem and wanted to avoid further risks, though he was unsure about the severity at that time.
Ten Hag also highlighted, “Our bench is strong.” Substituting Zirkzee was beneficial, and the player had an impressive performance.
Mount’s injury status is uncertain, potentially affecting his availability for United’s upcoming game against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Brighton led 1-0 at halftime with a goal from Kaoru Mitoma’s cross, which might have influenced Ten Hag’s decision to make changes.
United equalized in the second half with a goal from Zirkzee, who had also scored in the season opener against Fulham. Amad Diallo then equalized, but a potential winning goal by Alejandro Garnacho was ruled out by VAR for an offside infringement by Zirkzee.
