Arsenal brought in Chelsea’s attacking midfielder Raheem Sterling on a loan deal during the summer transfer period and also expressed interest in acquiring their goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli, as reported by The Athletic. They also considered Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Dan Bentley, but a last-minute move on transfer deadline day fell through. Additionally, Wigan Athletic’s Sam Tickle was considered as an alternative.
Despite Bettinelli only making one appearance since his move to Chelsea in the summer of 2021, Arsenal viewed him as a potential option for their squad.
Cana, who joined Arsenal alongside manager Mikel Arteta in December 2019, has played a key role in scouting goalkeepers for the team since then. His previous work with Raya at Brentford led to the smart decision to sign the Spaniard based on his recommendations.
Ultimately, the North London club was unable to secure another goalkeeper, leaving summer signing Tommy Setford to step into the third-choice role. Setford, an 18-year-old who joined Arsenal’s academy from Ajax, will now be part of the first-team setup, though some believe his development might benefit from staying in the academy.
Arsenal lost two goalkeepers over the summer, with Aaron Ramsdale transferring to Southampton on deadline day and Estonia international Karl Hein moving to Real Valladolid on loan for the rest of the season.
