Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta chose not to pursue England international striker Ivan Toney because he didn’t believe the fit with the team would be right, as reported by the Independent.
The former Newcastle United forward was a summer target for Arsenal, but he ended up joining Saudi Pro League team Al-Ahli on transfer deadline day, signing a four-year deal worth £403,000 per week with bonuses – equivalent to £800,000 per week before tax in the UK.
Arsenal considers their current squad to be solid, and any new additions need to seamlessly integrate. The Gunners are no longer interested in signing players simply to fill gaps but aim to build a well-rounded squad.
They believe that this approach enhances performance and allows the team to reach their maximum potential, which is why they opted to bring in Raheem Sterling on loan from Chelsea.
Arsenal feel the 29-year-old Sterling can boost the team’s morale, and Arteta sees him as a leader who positively influences his teammates.
The strong sense of unity among Arsenal’s players over the past four years has been evident, and they were reluctant to disrupt this with just any new signing. Sterling’s previous experience with Arteta at Manchester City means he is already familiar with the tactical approach, and he will be eager to make an immediate impact at his new club.
He might debut when Arsenal face Tottenham Hotspur after the September international break, and his extensive experience and trophy collection could be valuable as Arsenal aims to improve in the title race this season.
Arsenal secured Sterling’s loan without paying a fee, and there is no option or obligation to purchase him. They are covering significantly less than half of his £325,000 weekly salary, with some sources suggesting it is around £100,000 per week, making it a favorable arrangement for a player of his quality and experience.
