Declan Rice publicly defends Arsenal player fans have had enough of and want dropping from the team ASAP

Declan Rice has come to the defense of his Arsenal teammate after fans suggested he should be benched.

On Thursday night, Arsenal played to a goalless draw against Atalanta in the Champions League. The hosts, reigning Europa League champions, were awarded a penalty in the second half, but Gunners goalkeeper David Raya made an impressive save from Mateo Retegui. Following the match, winger Gabriel Martinelli faced significant criticism from supporters due to another lackluster performance, with some calling for him to be replaced ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City.

After the game, Rice spoke up for Martinelli, stating that although he may be quiet, he is incredibly determined. He noted Martinelli’s dedication in training, emphasizing that he works hard with the attacking coach to improve his scoring abilities.

Rice expressed confidence in Martinelli’s potential impact, stating, “We really need him; he’s a crucial player.” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reflected on the emotionally challenging game, acknowledging the need for discipline during tough moments and highlighting the team’s growth compared to last season. He pointed out that, while the defense held strong, the team struggled with ball possession and failed to capitalize on opportunities, including a missed chance from Martinelli. Arteta concluded that there is significant room for improvement moving forward.
