Owen Hargreaves is hopeful about Manchester United’s prospects for adding to Erik ten Hag’s trophy cabinet in this season’s Europa League. After a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League and a lackluster run in last season’s Champions League, United is competing in the second-tier European tournament again.
Historically, the Red Devils have seen success in the Europa League, winning in 2017 under José Mourinho. However, their last run in the competition ended in the quarter-finals when they were defeated by Sevilla two seasons ago.
This season has started poorly for United, with only two wins in their first five Premier League matches, prompting the team to focus on cup competitions as a possible route to silverware. Hargreaves believes Ten Hag is motivated to secure a European trophy, aiming for his third title with the club after previously winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
In a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Hargreaves assessed United’s situation, noting, “When you’re in the Champions League and you’re not at the level of the other teams, you get exposed quickly.” While last year’s Champions League campaign was disappointing, he remains positive about United’s chances in the Europa League, citing the squad’s strength. “Winning the Europa League is a realistic goal for them,” he remarked, indicating that achieving this could solidify Ten Hag’s position at the club.
Hargreaves compared United’s situation to Arsenal’s historical challenges against Bayern Munich, stressing that repeated heavy defeats can harm a team’s morale. He feels that United is well-positioned to pursue and possibly win the Europa League.
On United’s performance so far this season, Hargreaves candidly acknowledged their shortcomings, particularly considering their strong summer signings. He stressed the importance of regaining momentum and highlighted the Europa League as a key opportunity for the players. While recognizing their ambition to compete in the Champions League, he suggested that participating in a tournament where they can genuinely contend might be more beneficial.
Looking ahead, young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is set to make his Europa League debut against Twente on Wednesday. Although Mainoo is still finding his form after a lengthy summer with the England squad at Euro 2024, Hargreaves is optimistic that the arrival of Manuel Ugarte could bolster the midfield and support Mainoo’s growth.
Hargreaves commended Mainoo’s playing style, emphasizing his poise on the pitch. However, he also pointed out the need for better midfield balance. He mentioned that while United has talented players, effective teamwork is essential—particularly in regaining possession quickly after losing it. He recognized that this was an issue last season and noted that the current season hasn’t met expectations despite promising summer additions.
Regarding Ugarte, Hargreaves expressed confidence in his ability to enhance midfield performance, describing him as a pressing player skilled at winning back the ball.
