Christian Eriksen gave a brutally honest interview after Manchester United’s performance against FC Twente, where they settled for a draw following Sam Lammers’ equalizer that canceled out Eriksen’s first-half goal.
Erik ten Hag’s team left Old Trafford with just one point on Wednesday, and Ten Hag faced significant criticism for his poorly timed substitutions in the Europa League match.
Post-match, a frustrated Eriksen expressed his disappointment, stating, “As a team, we are mainly disappointed. Ultimately, it wasn’t good enough. It seemed like they wanted it more than us, which is unacceptable.”
He continued, “Scoring a goal, I thought it would be the match-winner, but that wasn’t the case. Everyone is reflecting on their performance. As professional footballers, we know we can’t allow this. While we didn’t lose, it feels like one, especially at home.”
It was a challenging night for Ten Hag and his United squad, who initially took the lead in the 35th minute through a goal from the in-form Eriksen. Although Marcus Rashford showed flashes of brilliance, FC Twente equalized in the 68th minute after Eriksen mishandled a pass.
Ten Hag remarked, “We kept them in the game at 1-0 while controlling it. You have to maintain consistency. In the second half, we dropped our level and allowed the goal.”
He added, “We needed to secure a second goal to finish them off, but we let them back into it with our mistake.”
Ten Hag’s substitutions drew scrutiny, and former AC Milan midfielder Ruud Gullit criticized him afterward, stating, “I saw Erik ten Hag constantly speaking to Alejandro Garnacho. In moments like that, a player just wants to focus.”
Gullit concluded, “I’m not surprised by the performance Manchester United displayed tonight. We’ve come to expect it. How many millions did Ten Hag invest in his team again?”
