Liverpool has received a significant boost before their match against Wolves on Saturday, as Alisson Becker is expected to return from a brief injury to take his place as the starting goalkeeper.
The Brazilian missed the last two matches due to a minor hamstring issue sustained during the team’s opening Champions League game against AC Milan last week.
The 31-year-old participated fully in training this week and completed the session with his teammates on Friday. In his pre-match press conference, manager Arne Slot confirmed that Alisson is ready to play at Molineux, which is a key advantage for Liverpool, as the former Roma player has been vital for the team in recent seasons.
“We believe he is ready to play,” Slot said about Alisson, as reported by The Athletic. “He trained with the group yesterday, so we expect him to complete today’s session as well. Therefore, we think he is available.”
“While we’re delighted to have Alisson back, I want to acknowledge that Caoimhin (Kelleher) performed excellently in the two matches he started for us. It’s a testament to having multiple strong options in key positions.”
Caoimhin Kelleher, despite understanding his role at Liverpool, may feel disappointed to be benched for the Wolves match after his solid performances in the previous games.
Given his age, it could be time for him to leave Anfield in search of more playing time, as there’s little chance for him to secure a starting position while Alisson is on the squad.
The Irish international would be an excellent choice for many clubs, and with Giorgi Mamardashvili set to join Liverpool next summer, this could likely be Kelleher’s final season with the Premier League club.
