The 2024/25 season could be Mohamed Salah’s last at Liverpool, as Saudi clubs are preparing to pursue him as a free agent next year. Salah’s contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season, and the club has not yet made a new offer to the 32-year-old forward.
Saudi Arabia’s interest in Salah has been ongoing for several years. Last summer, Al Ittihad made a significant effort to sign him, but Liverpool rejected their offers, wanting to keep him for another season. As the June 2024 transfer window approached, Al Ittihad renewed their efforts, hoping that a managerial change at Liverpool, specifically Jurgen Klopp’s departure, might sway Salah. However, a transfer at that time seemed unlikely.
With Salah’s contract nearing its end, Saudi clubs, supported by the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), are adjusting their approach. The PIF aims to secure a pre-contract agreement by early 2024, with talks expected to ramp up in January or February. Reports indicate that the PIF is planning an attractive 2+1-year contract for Salah, featuring a significant salary.
Salah has been in discussions with various Saudi clubs over the years, and formal offers are expected soon. There’s increasing optimism within Saudi Arabia that he will agree to terms for a move ahead of the 2025/26 season. While Al Ittihad is a leading candidate for his signature, other clubs backed by the PIF, like Al Hilal, Al Nassr, and Al Ahli, are also seen as potential options.
If Salah chooses to leave, Liverpool will face the challenge of replacing one of its most legendary players. During his time at Anfield, he has consistently performed at a high level, with 216 goals and 93 assists in 357 appearances, including five goals and four assists this season.
Liverpool is already looking ahead, with reports suggesting that Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo is a top candidate to succeed Salah. Other Bundesliga players like Karim Adeyemi and Leroy Sane have also emerged as potential replacements. As Salah’s time at Liverpool seems to be coming to an end, the next few months will be critical for both his future and Liverpool’s plans moving forward without their star winger.
