Former striker Marco van Basten has taken aim at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag for acquiring midfielder Manuel Ugarte from PSG. Van Basten feels Ten Hag has made questionable choices by signing players who do not meet the required standards. His remarks followed Manchester United’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at home, which left the team with only two league victories this season, placing them 13th after six matches. Despite receiving strong backing in the transfer market, with new players like Leny Yoro, Matthijs De Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, and Ugarte, Ten Hag is facing considerable pressure, as the team’s performance has not improved significantly.
On Ziggo Sport, Van Basten specifically criticized Ugarte’s €50 million transfer, stating, “How is this guy walking around there? It’s ridiculous how much Ten Hag has spent on players who aren’t even good.”
Reports indicate that United paid £50.8 million for Ugarte, intended as a backup for Casemiro. However, the 23-year-old has struggled to make an impact in his two matches, including a shaky debut in a 1-1 draw against Twente and a lackluster performance against Tottenham, where he was substituted for Christian Eriksen.
