Former scout Mick Brown states that Liverpool is eager to secure a new contract with defender Virgil Van Dijk. The Dutch player is in the final year of his deal, leaving his future at Anfield uncertain.
Alongside central defensive partner Ibrahima Konate, Van Dijk has begun the season strongly, demonstrating that he remains at the peak of his abilities at 33 years old.
Under Arne Slot, the Liverpool defense has been revitalized, conceding just two goals in seven league matches this season. Van Dijk is a crucial factor in their impressive defensive performances, and the club is determined to retain him.
Brown, who previously scouted for Manchester United, Tottenham, and Aston Villa, told Football Insider:
“I’ve heard they’re desperate for him to sign. He’s got this all-conquering reputation and he’s seen as one of, if not, the best defender in the world, and he’s playing in a side that wants to win things. Much will depend on how they perform this season, and they have started strongly. They’ll be looking at it and assessing whether they can improve on where they are now. If he leaves, Liverpool aren’t going to be able to get anybody who’s anywhere near as good as him.”
Liverpool risks losing not only Van Dijk but also Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold for free at the end of the season. There are significant concerns regarding how the club has handled the contract situations of these three key players, who have been vital to their success this season and have propelled Liverpool to the top of the league.
The absence of Van Dijk would significantly impact the team, as he has been a long-time leader in defense. His world-class qualities have not diminished, as evidenced by his performances this season.
