Barcelona star ‘rejected’ £50m-a-year salary to leave Camp Nou
Robert Lewandowski reportedly turned down a €60 million (£50 million) yearly offer from a Saudi Arabian club during the summer transfer window, indicating his intention to stay at Barcelona. Since his transfer from Bayern Munich in July 2022, the 36-year-old forward has made 100 appearances for the Catalan team, netting 63 goals and contributing 19 assists.
Last season, Lewandowski scored 26 goals and provided 9 assists in 49 games, despite speculation regarding his future with two years remaining on his contract, plus an option for another year. Although there were rumors about Barcelona possibly selling him, he quickly dismissed the enticing Saudi proposal.
This season, Lewandowski has maintained impressive form, scoring four goals and assisting two in five La Liga matches. While some think he might consider a move to Saudi Arabia later in his career, his current performance indicates he is still highly competitive at the top level.
Hansi Flick commended Lewandowski’s commitment, stating, “He works hard with the team and presses effectively. He’s fully committed and handles stress well. What a great player.”
