Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has strongly backed his teammate, fellow Spaniard Robert Sanchez, who recently lost his spot as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. Sanchez has been heavily criticized this season due to multiple costly mistakes that led to goals, prompting head coach Enzo Maresca to replace him with Filip Jorgensen in Chelsea’s recent Premier League match against West Ham United.
The Blues managed a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge, pushing them back to fourth place in the league table. However, one of the most talked-about topics following the match was Maresca’s decision to bench Sanchez, a move many fans had been calling for.
Chelsea fans have expressed frustration with Sanchez’s performances, as his errors have led to several goals conceded. His latest blunder allowed Manchester City to equalize due to poor decision-making. Amid growing pressure, Maresca made the tough choice to leave the goalkeeper out of the crucial match against West Ham.
Although many expected Sanchez to start, Maresca opted for Jorgensen instead. This decision was viewed as a wake-up call for Sanchez, signaling that he needs to improve if he wants to regain his starting position.
Cucurella remains hopeful that Sanchez will bounce back from this setback. In a recent interview, he stressed that his teammate must remain focused and keep working hard, as setbacks are a natural part of a footballer’s career.
“It’s tough,” Cucurella acknowledged. “But sometimes, stepping away from the spotlight for a bit can help. It allows a player to focus on getting better without the added pressure. Everyone at Chelsea goes through difficult periods at some point.”
Cucurella is confident that Sanchez will get another chance and encouraged him to be ready when that opportunity comes. He added, “The key is to keep working hard. When his chance comes again, he must be ready to seize it. He has the quality to turn things around.”
Having previously played together at Brighton, Cucurella and Sanchez share a strong bond. The Chelsea defender revealed that he has been offering emotional support to Sanchez during this challenging time.
“I told him to stay calm. Every footballer faces tough moments,” Cucurella said. “The important thing is to keep training hard and working even harder. I’ve known him for years, and I’ll always be there for him if he needs anything.”
While Sanchez’s future is uncertain, Chelsea’s main priority is finishing the season strongly. With a chance to qualify for the Champions League, every player in Maresca’s squad must perform at their best.
Cucurella emphasized that the team’s success is paramount. “Today, the team won, and that’s what matters,” he said. “It doesn’t matter who plays in goal, as long as Chelsea keeps winning.”
Sanchez now faces a crucial period where he must prove to Maresca that he deserves another chance. While it’s unclear if he will regain his starting role, with dedication and support from his teammates, he could still play an important role in Chelsea’s season.
