Chelsea is actively looking to sign a new goalkeeper to provide competition for Robert Sanchez, who is currently set to start the season as the first-choice under new head coach Enzo Maresca. This decision raises questions about the future of Djordje Petrovic, who impressed last season under Mauricio Pochettino but is now seen as a potential backup option.

 

Robert Sanchez, 26, has shown promise in training, demonstrating the qualities Maresca values in a goalkeeper, particularly in playing out from the back. Despite this, Chelsea believes they need another goalkeeper who can both deputize for and challenge Sanchez, ensuring depth and quality in the position.

 

Chelsea initially delayed entering the goalkeeper market to allow Maresca time to evaluate his options. However, the club has now decided to pursue another goalkeeper with a similar profile to Sanchez. This move aims to mitigate any potential performance drop-off and provide tactical flexibility over a demanding 75-80 game season, including the upcoming Club World Cup.

 

Although Petrovic is highly rated, there is concern about the gap in quality between him and Sanchez, should Maresca need to make a change. Chelsea’s strategy involves finding a goalkeeper who can develop under Maresca’s system, rather than targeting a high-profile No.1 like Mike Maignan. This approach ensures a smoother transition and adaptability within the squad.

 

Reports have linked Chelsea with Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin, but he does not fit the club’s specific requirements. The search continues for a goalkeeper who can start on the bench and gradually compete for the starting spot, offering the club necessary squad rotation options.

 

Aside from the goalkeeper position, Chelsea is also targeting a new striker and a right-footed winger. Meanwhile, speculation about interest in Fulham’s Andreas Pereira is considered inaccurate. The club is also expected to complete the signing of 16-year-old Brazilian talent Gabriel Mec, highlighting their ongoing efforts to strengthen and balance the squad for the upcoming season.
