Barcelona coach Hansi Flick is pushing the club’s leadership to renew the contract of one of their essential first-team players. After Barcelona’s dominant 5-0 win over Valencia in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals, the German coach has ramped up his efforts to secure Frenkie de Jong’s future at the club.
As per Catalan publication Sport, Flick sees De Jong as a vital member of his team despite the midfielder’s ongoing physical issues. The coach considers the Dutchman to be Barcelona’s primary defensive midfielder, ahead of Marc Casadó, making the renewal of his contract a priority.
However, financial constraints present a significant challenge. De Jong’s current contract includes large deferred payments, making the upcoming season the most expensive yet for the club. As a result, Barcelona is working on a long-term deal that would restructure his wages to alleviate the financial burden.
Despite Flick’s strong support, the negotiations remain complex. De Jong is reportedly cautious, given the financial sacrifices he’s already made in past contract discussions. With Barcelona’s financial struggles still in play, securing an agreement will be a challenging task for the club’s leadership.
