Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has claimed that his ex-teammate Xabi Alonso may live to regret turning down the chance to manage Liverpool FC. Alonso, who played a pivotal role at Anfield during his playing career, was tipped for the managerial role before Arne Slot was appointed. Kuyt, who scored 71 goals for the Reds, suggested that Alonso must have had compelling reasons for declining such a prestigious opportunity, noting the bravery required to make such a decision.
Kuyt expressed admiration for Alonso’s achievements as the current manager of Bayer Leverkusen. Under Alonso’s leadership, Leverkusen secured a historic double by winning both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. The team also reached the Europa League final and set a European record by going 51 competitive matches without defeat, including an entire Bundesliga season without a loss. These accomplishments highlight Alonso’s rapid rise as one of the most promising young managers in football.
Reflecting on Alonso’s decision, Kuyt stated, “When a club like Liverpool comes for you, as a manager with history there, you have to be a real man to turn it down. But I think he did it with good reason. He is in the middle of making an unbelievable career, and what he achieved last season with Bayer Leverkusen was amazing.” Kuyt’s comments underscore the strategic nature of Alonso’s choice to remain with Leverkusen and continue building his managerial resume.
Kuyt also pointed out the challenges that come with managing Liverpool, especially after the tenure of Jurgen Klopp. “To manage that team after Jurgen Klopp, you need a lot of experience. Xabi is still a young manager, and despite having won a lot already, I think he chose wisely to stay with Leverkusen. Not many people would have done that. Maybe, for some, it’s a strange decision, but it’s at least a very brave one.”
While Alonso has decided to stay at Leverkusen for now, Kuyt speculated that he might consider the Liverpool job again in the future. “I don’t think for a second that it’s a case of him not being interested in Liverpool. Maybe it’s a job he’ll look at again at a later date,” Kuyt said.
