Argentina International and Former Barcelona player Lionel Messi reveals reason for not choosing Barcelona in transfer decision after leaving PSG

Lionel Messi has expressed a strong desire to return to Barcelona after leaving Paris Saint-Germain this summer but refrained from linking his decision to the club’s financial issues.

Messi departed Camp Nou in 2021 because his contract couldn’t be registered due to financial problems. As his stint at PSG comes to a close, he has chosen to move to Inter Miami, uncertain whether Barcelona might encounter similar financial difficulties in the future.

In an interview with Mundo Deportivo and SPORT, Messi shared his longing to return, saying, “I truly wanted to.”

He also expressed concerns about potentially facing a similar situation, reflecting on his past departure in 2021.

Lionel Messi has emphasized his desire to make independent decisions while considering his family’s well-being.

He mentioned that although La Liga had initially approved his return to Barcelona, unresolved issues remained. Messi wanted to avoid a scenario where Barcelona might need to sell players or reduce wages, which impacted his decision-making process.

Feeling somewhat weary, Messi reflected on how, in 2021, despite La Liga’s initial approval, a return to Barcelona wasn’t possible, leaving him and his family temporarily staying in a Paris hotel.

He expressed disappointment that he couldn’t return to Barça on his own terms, despite his strong desire to do so.

Messi clarified that financial considerations were not the primary factor in his situation. He explained that there were no detailed discussions about the specifics of the deal; a proposal was made but never formalized or signed.

Despite initial plans, progress stalled, and financial terms were never formally discussed. Messi emphasized that if money had been his main concern, he could have pursued opportunities in places like Saudi Arabia.

His decision was not influenced by financial gain, despite the offers appearing substantial.

Regarding his interactions with Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta, Messi noted they spoke only once or twice, while he had more frequent conversations with coach and former teammate Xavi.

When asked if he thought Barcelona had explored every option to bring him back, the 35-year-old replied, “That’s their issue. There were many things missing. The club couldn’t give a 100% guarantee that I could return today.”

Speculation has arisen about Messi potentially returning to Barcelona in a manner similar to David Beckham’s loan spells with AC Milan during MLS off-seasons. Messi was also asked about taking on a role as a secretary or ambassador at the club.

He mentioned that after retiring, his family plans to settle permanently in the city where he has spent most of his life, expressing a wish to stay close to the club.

“As I’ve always said, I love the club, so maybe one day I can help out and contribute in some way. I’m not sure when that will be,” he said. “Yes, I would like to be here again. I appreciate the affection I’ve received from people throughout my career.”
