Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg is drawing interest from various European clubs, but the Merseyside team is not prepared to let him go for a low price.
The 22-year-old spent the previous season on loan at Mainz, where he featured in 33 Bundesliga matches, netting three goals and contributing to eight clean sheets. Van den Berg has returned to Liverpool for pre-season training, eager to make an impact and secure a long-awaited chance with the Reds.
The Dutch player understands that securing regular playing time might necessitate a move away, which is crucial for his growth. However, Liverpool is reportedly demanding £25 million for him, which could be a stumbling block for potential buyers, including Brentford and Southampton, among others.
After Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Real Betis in a pre-season friendly, Van den Berg remarked, “I recognize that high prices are part of today’s market. If Liverpool believes £20-£25 million is justified given my good season, it is indeed quite substantial.”
Van den Berg perceives the £25 million valuation as a form of recognition, although it complicates a potential transfer. He expressed a desire for regular playing time and emphasized that while Liverpool remains his dream club, finding a solution for his future is crucial.
He joined Liverpool in 2019 for £4.4 million but has only made four senior appearances. With Joel Matip departing on a free transfer, Van den Berg sees an opportunity to impress under new manager Arne Slot during pre-season. He acknowledged the need for consistent game time to further his development, having gained valuable experience through stints in the Championship and Bundesliga.
