Liverpool might have a significant advantage over a competing Premier League club for an exciting attacker as the summer transfer window nears its end.
Football Insider reports that both Liverpool and Tottenham are interested in Eberechi Eze, with Crystal Palace concerned that the 26-year-old could join Michael Olise (and possibly Marc Guehi) in leaving Selhurst Park.
Eze has a £60m release clause in his contract, which can only be activated by Champions League clubs, making Liverpool potentially more appealing compared to Tottenham, who are limited to Europa League play and can’t secure him at a fixed price.
Eze has delivered impressive back-to-back seasons in the Premier League with Palace, achieving double figures in goals, an impressive accomplishment for a player often positioned behind the forwards at a club that finished 11th and 10th in those seasons.
After a standout performance in April’s 5-2 win over West Ham, where Eze scored once and assisted another goal, Danny Murphy praised him on Match of the Day, calling him a ‘Champions League player’ who ‘can do it all’. Despite modest passing statistics compared to his European peers, Eze’s scoring ability and proficiency in one-on-one situations, ranking in the 91st percentile for successful take-ons, are notable.
Given Liverpool’s presence in the Champions League and their aspirations for major titles, there is a clear opportunity for the club to attract Eze to Merseyside during this transfer window. Although he would face competition for a starting role, his addition would undoubtedly strengthen the squad, particularly in attacking positions, if Liverpool pursues him aggressively this month.
