Reports indicate that Liverpool’s new head coach, Arne Slot, has not been fully persuaded by Ibrahima Konate during the pre-season preparations. Slot, who took over for the 2024/25 season after the departure of the legendary Jurgen Klopp, has observed his team performing well in friendly matches against strong opponents such as Manchester United and Arsenal.
However, it seems that not all players have impressed the Dutch coach. Football Insider reports that Slot has raised concerns about Konate, leading to fresh uncertainty about the French defender’s future at Anfield. Konate, who was acquired from RB Leipzig for £36 million in 2021, has demonstrated his potential but has struggled with injuries. Last season, he made 37 appearances in all competitions but only started 17 Premier League matches, which has raised questions about his dependability.
Slot’s reservations reportedly arise from a short period of working with Konate since the team returned from their summer break. Early evaluations, based on both match performances and training sessions, have led Slot to question whether Konate aligns with his vision for Liverpool’s defense. The defender’s inconsistent availability and perceived limitations with the ball have exacerbated these concerns.
As a result, there is speculation that Liverpool might prioritize acquiring a new central defender before the transfer window closes. With Van Dijk’s future also in question, Slot seems keen to strengthen his defensive options as he aims to reshape the team to his preferences.
