Manchester United has been cautioned against pursuing a transfer for Brentford’s prominent forward, Ivan Toney, despite earlier speculation linking him with several leading Premier League teams.
The England striker was expected to be one of the most sought-after players this summer, but no major club, including United, has made a definitive bid.
Toney was frequently associated with teams such as Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea. However, Tottenham opted to acquire Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth, and Arsenal and Chelsea have yet to show serious interest, leading to doubts about Toney’s fit for these top clubs. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has raised concerns about whether Toney suits United’s current plans and future goals.
Ferdinand remarked via the Daily Mail, “Personally, I wouldn’t consider Ivan Toney. I believe his age and profile are not right for the club. It’s puzzling that he was rumored to be worth £100m or £80m and linked with top teams like Arsenal and Chelsea, but now there are no offers. I don’t see him fitting in at United.”
Toney had a standout 2022-23 Premier League season, finishing as the third-highest scorer with 20 goals in 33 appearances, behind only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
United have already enhanced their attacking options this summer with the signing of Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, in addition to Rasmus Hojlund. Yet, with the transfer window nearing its end, there are indications that United might still seek another forward.
As the transfer window approaches its final stages, Manchester United’s pursuit of Toney remains under scrutiny. Ferdinand’s remarks highlight ongoing doubts about Toney’s compatibility with United’s strategy, leaving his potential move to the club in question.
