Mason Mount was substituted at halftime during Manchester United’s defeat to Brighton due to an injury.
Brighton’s Joao Pedro scored a header in the 95th minute to secure a 2-1 victory over United. The disappointing result was worsened by Mount’s injury, which required him to be replaced by Joshua Zirkzee at the break.
After his £55 million transfer from Chelsea, Mount appeared in just 20 games across all competitions last season due to injuries. This season, he started fit thanks to a successful pre-season, but Erik ten Hag delivered some troubling news in his post-match press conference.
When asked about Mount’s substitution, Ten Hag said, “It was a necessary decision.” “He had a problem, and I didn’t want to risk it. I’m not sure how serious it is right now.”
“But we have a strong bench. If you have Zirkzee available, don’t hesitate; put in someone who can make an impact, and we saw Josh perform well.” The extent of Mount’s injury remains unclear, but he is doubtful for United’s upcoming match against Liverpool at Old Trafford next Sunday.
Brighton led 1-0 at halftime with Danny Welbeck’s tap-in from Kaoru Mitoma’s cross, which might have pressured Ten Hag to make changes. Zirkzee, who scored the decisive goal in the season opener against Fulham last Saturday, was introduced, and United managed to equalize in the second half.
