Manchester United have been advised to reconsider their pursuit of Brentford’s star striker, Ivan Toney, despite previous links to various top Premier League teams.
The England international was expected to be highly sought after this summer, but no major club, including United, has made a definitive offer.
Toney had been frequently associated with clubs such as Tottenham, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United. Nevertheless, Tottenham opted for Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke, while Arsenal and Chelsea have not yet shown interest in Toney, raising doubts about his fit for these elite teams.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has voiced reservations about Toney’s compatibility with Old Trafford. Ferdinand questions whether the 28-year-old striker aligns with United’s current strategy and long-term goals.
In a statement to the Daily Mail, he said, “Personally, I wouldn’t pursue someone like Ivan Toney. I think his age and profile are not suitable for the club.
I just don’t see it as a good match. It seemed odd to me. He was a player everyone thought might move to Arsenal or Chelsea for £100m, £80m or so, but now there are no offers. I’m puzzled by this. For Man United, I just don’t see it as a fit.”
Toney had a standout 2022-23 Premier League season, finishing as the third-highest scorer with 20 goals in 33 games, behind only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane.
Manchester United have already bolstered their attack this summer with the addition of Dutch forward Joshua Zirkzee, complementing their current squad, which includes Rasmus Hojlund.
However, recent reports indicate that they might still be looking for another attacker before the transfer window closes.
With the transfer window nearing its end, all eyes will be on Manchester United.
