Arsenal found it difficult to generate clear scoring chances against Atalanta, with Martinelli missing the team’s best opportunity in the second half. This failure has extended his streak without a goal or assist to 17 games, putting additional pressure on his starting role, especially with such a significant match approaching.
Carragher shared his perspective, indicating that Martinelli’s inclusion in the lineup for Sunday’s game at the Etihad is uncertain. He noted the impact of Martin Odegaard’s absence, which contributed to Arsenal’s creative difficulties. Carragher emphasized that Odegaard’s ability to link up with Bukayo Saka and create space was missed, while Kai Havertz, who was supposed to fulfill a similar role, struggled to integrate into the system.
He proposed that Arsenal might think about substituting Leandro Trossard for Martinelli in the match against City. “Although Martinelli’s role is uncertain,” Carragher stated, “I believe the manager will probably continue to support him despite his struggles in front of goal.”
Thierry Henry, joining Carragher, concurred that Martinelli is currently facing a tough phase, particularly due to his ongoing goal drought. He stressed that this experience is part of the learning curve for both Martinelli and the team, who must rely on one another and evolve together. He pointed out that the team’s creativity and ball control fell short of what is needed to compete with elite teams like Manchester City. Ferdinand noted that Arsenal must be more clinical and decisive with their limited chances against City, highlighting Martinelli’s missed opportunity as a reflection of the need for improvement in their finishing. He remarked, “If they get one or two chances against City, they must capitalize. City won’t offer them five or six opportunities, so Arsenal’s forwards need to elevate their performance, especially in finishing.”
