Raheem Sterling joined Arsenal on loan just before last month’s transfer deadline, but Mark Lawrenson has warned that his influence at the club may be limited.
The seasoned England international became an unexpected target for Arsenal after being sidelined by Chelsea’s new coach, Enzo Maresca, and will be at the Emirates for the season. He is anticipated to compete with Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard for attacking positions, having already played in matches against Tottenham and Atalanta.
However, Lawrenson believes Sterling will mainly act as a backup, suggesting he will be utilized more for squad depth rather than as a starter. He speculated that Mikel Arteta might have suggested Sterling could see about 25 minutes of play each week unless he impresses when given the opportunity.
Despite concerns regarding the signing, Arteta remains optimistic about Sterling, referencing their previous time together at Manchester City. He emphasized Sterling’s eagerness and determination to prove himself as crucial reasons for his decision to bring him to Arsenal.
