Following the departure of Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, Crystal Palace has now set a £70 million price tag for the 24-year-old. Football Insider reported on Tuesday morning that Liverpool is reluctant to meet this asking price for the England center-back.
Guehi’s £70 million valuation aligns with the current market trends where even a player like Leny Yoro, with only a season and a half of senior experience, can command nearly £60 million.
The Palace defender has excelled for his country in the European Championship and is just two matches away from reaching 100 Premier League appearances. His recent performances in Germany have certainly enhanced his value.
Keith Wyness, former CEO of Everton, described Guehi as a “perfect fit” for Liverpool, while his former England under-21 teammate Josef Bursik praised him as “an absolute tank,” suggesting that playing as a goalkeeper for Liverpool would be like having a “brick wall” in front of you.
Although Guehi would be an excellent addition to Arne Slot’s team, historical patterns suggest that Michael Edwards is unlikely to pay what he considers an excessive amount. If Liverpool deems £70 million too high for the 24-year-old, it’s unlikely he will join Anfield soon.
It would be unfortunate if this price is the main reason Liverpool does not pursue the Englishman, but this is a reflection of the current transfer market dynamics, and FSG is known for being firm on transfer fees.
