Manchester City could face severe consequences if they are found to have violated Premier League financial regulations. Reports indicate that a hearing for the 115 alleged breaches will start on September 16.
In February 2023, the Premier League charged City with breaching financial rules over a nine-year span from 2009 to 2018. The charges include failing to provide accurate financial information for multiple seasons, details on former manager Roberto Mancini’s pay, and player remuneration, as well as non-cooperation with the league’s investigation.
The investigation began in 2018 following revelations from Football Leaks documents, which included sensitive contract details and emails suggesting improper payments. Manchester City has denied these allegations.
Given the gravity and intricacy of the case, if the breaches are confirmed, City might face relegation. The Times reports that the hearing’s verdict could come in early 2025.
Previously, UEFA imposed a two-year ban on City in 2020 for financial rule violations, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned it, citing procedural issues. The Premier League’s hearing might address aspects that were previously deemed time-barred.
Additionally, City’s legal dispute with the Premier League over transaction rules is expected to be resolved in the next two weeks.
