Manchester United supporters are frustrated after Fabrizio Romano disclosed that a player who is out of favor with Erik ten Hag is unwilling to leave the club.
Following United’s disappointing eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season, significant changes were deemed necessary at Old Trafford this summer.
New additions to Erik ten Hag’s squad include Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, and Noussair Mazraoui, with the possibility of further acquisitions before the transfer window closes on August 30.
Several first-team and youth players have departed, such as Willy Kambwala, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Raphael Varane. United might benefit from offloading additional ‘dead wood’ to free up wage space, and defender Victor Lindelof is among those considered expendable.
The 30-year-old centre-back, who has been with United since 2017 after joining from Benfica, is now in the last year of his contract and seems to have no future under Ten Hag.
Although he played 28 matches last season due to injuries to teammates, his own hamstring and groin issues caused him to miss 22 games.
With 259 appearances for the club, Lindelof is now behind Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Yoro, and even veteran Jonny Evans in the center-back hierarchy. Earning £120,000 a week, his high salary as a reserve player has led fans to hope he will be transferred before the window closes.
Despite United’s efforts to facilitate a transfer, Romano has indicated that it is more probable Lindelof will leave next summer when his contract ends.
Romano informed The United Stand that Lindelof seems content with this arrangement and does not appear eager to leave Old Trafford.
This news has disappointed United fans, with one expressing frustration on X by saying, “Another player milking the cow dry,” and another noting, “Every player wants to stick with the big paycheck.”
In January, United extended Lindelof’s contract by 12 months in anticipation of selling him this summer, but a preseason injury has complicated the situation.
